2013 Audi Q5 First Drive

The new powertrain roster won't disappoint.

Audi may have been a little late to the small-luxo-SUV segment, what with the Acura RDX, BMW X3, and Lexus RX arriving before the Q5 landed for 2009. But as a five-ute comparison test from that year showed, the wait was worth it—the Audi won. For 2013, the Q5 gets a mid-cycle refresh that comprises a host of cosmetic and mechanical updates. Although the new bumpers and lights are welcome, it’s the powertrain changes that should most interest luxury-crossover buyers.

Motivationally Speaking
Where once there were just two engine options, the U.S.-spec Q5 will soon offer four. A turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder continues as the base engine; unlike the European models, which get an updated and slightly more powerful and efficient version of the 2.0T, U.S. versions carry on for now with the 211-hp version that has served in the Q5, as well as other models, such as the A4 and A5. We expect the updated engine to clear customs in a year or two.
Replacing the 3.2-liter V-6 in the Q5 is Audi’s prolific 3.0T; the “T” stands for supercharger, obviously. This 3.0-liter V-6 debuted in the S4 for 2010 and has since spread across the Audi lineup. In Q5 trim it makes 272 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. We drove a Q5 3.0T with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, although the U.S.-market 3.0T instead will deliver power to all four wheels (Quattro four-wheel drive is standard across the range) via a conventional eight-speed automatic.
Engine option number three is a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel, the first diesel to be offered in the U.S. Q5. It won’t go on sale here until the fall of next year as a 2014 model, but if you can stand to wait, we recommend doing so for two reasons: First, it is one of the smoothest diesels we’ve ever driven. Even with 245 hp and 428 lb-ft on tap, it’s quiet, and it will not be that much slower than the 3.0T. Second, as it stands, the hot-rod SQ5, which uses a version of this engine, will not be brought to the U.S. The first diesel to power an Audi S vehicle, it uses two sequential turbochargers to boost the intake pressure and produce an astonishing 313 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. We say it’s plenty worthy of the S nameplate. If Audi sees a high demand for diesel Q5s in the U.S., there is a chance, albeit a small one, the SQ5 will come. Odds are that if we get an S version of the Q5 it will instead have a tuned-up version of the 3.0T gas V-6. Too bad. What can we say? We dream in Technicolor diesel.

Researchers developing washless coating for cars

Posted Jul 26th 2012 2:30PM

We could have easily filed this under "Too Good to Be True" or "Snake Oil," but it sounds legit, and certainly has our attention. Researchers in The Netherlands' Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) have developed a self-healing vehicle coating, meaning that one day, you may not have to wash your car.
Catarina Esteves of the department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry at TU/e and her team claims to have invented a solution to the problem of minor scrapes. Apparently the nano-capsule technology features special chemical groups that are able to re-orient themselves in the event that a surface with this compound is scratched.
The potential automotive use for this technology is obvious; it allows for the development of coatings that are not only water-resistant, but scratch resistant. A minor rain shower is all it would take to keep the car clean.
The implementation of this technology is not limited to the automotive world – it can also be employed on contact lenses, smartphone screens, and solar panels.
The benefit it could provide to the aviation industry would be two-fold. A plane employing this coating would not only need less frequent cleaning, but the inability for algae and dirt to build up means that the aircraft would allow for less wind resistance, resoling in more fuel efficient flying.

Audi reveals refreshed 2013 R8 lineup

It's hard to believe that Audi launched the R8 a full seven years ago. Since that time, the automaker has kept the two-seat sports car fresh with several changes including the addition of the roofless Spyder, an optional V10 and the sportier GT model, but now Audi has determined that it's finally time for the model's first full-on refresh. Today, Audi revealed the revamped 2013 R8 lineup, highlighted by subtle styling changes, a seven-speed S-tronic transmission (no more dreadful R-tronic!) and a new flagship V10 Plus model.

It takes a keen eye to pick out the design changes to the new R8, the most prominent being the redesigned LED headlights and taillights that come standard on all models. Audi has also revised the front bumper and grille, and out back, there's a larger diffuser and new circular tailpipes.
2013 Audi R8 SpyderPerhaps the biggest change to the R8 for 2013 is the addition of the new seven-speed S-tronic transmission that utilizes two mult-plate clutches. Each clutch engages with two independent sub-transmissions and alternately select gears, resulting in smoother shifts that take mere hundredths of as second. Thankfully, a six-speed manual is still offered, although Audi claims that the car equipped with the S-tronic is actually faster to 60 miles per hour by three-tenths of a second in all models.

A new R8 V10 Plus arrives at the flagship model, featuring the same carbon fiber reinforced plastic used on the R8 GT. The front splitter, mirrors, side blades, rear diffuser and lining for the engine compartment are all constructed of the lightweight material. The 5.2-liter V10 has also been slightly improved compared to the standard V10 model, producing 550 horsepower and 398 pound-feet torque.

European models will start rolling off the line at the end of this year, and while Audi has not mentioned U.S. availability or pricing, we expect our version of the R8 to follow very shortly thereafter.
