Volkswagen Scirocco GTS commemorates 30-year anniversary of original

It's been 30 years since the very first Volkswagen Scirocco GTS rolled off the assembly line. Featuring little more than a slightly reworked front valance and some trippy decal work, the original Scirocco GTS was likely most notable for the fact that it was the first in the family to rock a blacked-out B-pillar. Now Volkswagen is paying homage to the machine with a new Scirocco GTS.

Unveiled at the Auto Mobil International, the modern hatch rocks the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, complete with 210 horsepower, as the rest of the Scirocco range. A set of racing stripes spread from hood to lift gate lend the car a bit of sportiness, but the biggest changes can be found on the front and rear fascias.

Volkswagen tweaked both bumper covers with a unique design, and a new set of flared side skirts are part of the package as well. GTS trim also comes with those flashy five-spoke 18-inch wheels, and the keen-eyed among you may have spotted the familiar roof spoiler and rear diffuser. Both are lifted from the Scirocco R. Maybe GTS stands for GoT Stripes?

Electronic crash-avoidance systems get thumbs up from consumers in federal testing

accident avoidance

Posted May 29th 2012 9:30AM

Starting last fall, eight carmakers worked with the Department of Transportation on a study assessing drivers' acceptance of accident-avoidance technologies. The initial six-month program in the Connected Vehicle Safety Pilot Program put people on closed roads in cars that communicated wirelessly to issue warnings about lane changes, blind spots, forward collisions and other cars approaching intersections. Of the 688 participants, more than 90 percent wanted the tech in their cars, and that response rate covered just about all age ranges.

But perhaps the most remarkable finding about the study was that in spite of massive favor, none of the participants wanted to have to pay "more than $250" for the technologies. We don't know how the question was phrased, but when an iPod Touch costs $195, adding Ford Sync to a Fusion SE costs $395 and a trip to Disneyland for a family of four can bankrupt a small nation, we're slightly surprised that a suite of potentially lifesaving features isn't even worth considering for more than $250.

The study isn't over yet – the next phase involves 3,000 test cars trying out the features on open roads in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It will begin this fall and run into next year.

Fuel economy important to car buyers, survey finds

Car buyers are more interested in fuel economy.
Car buyers are more interested in fuel economy.
By: Autoweek Staff on 5/22/2012

A survey by Consumer Reports magazine finds that fuel economy is most important to car buyers.
Nearly 40 percent of those surveyed ranked gas mileage as the No. 1 buying factor. That was followed by quality (17 percent), safety (16 percent) and value (14 percent.) Only 6 percent of the 2,009 adults surveyed ranked performance as the most important factor.

AAA expects more Memorial Day weekend drivers than last year

Silicon Valley Highway 101 Traffic Hell, by Richard Masoner

Posted May 26th 2012 2:02PM

Memorial Day weekend is always a good opportunity to hit the road, and despite the sour state of the economy, AAA feels this weekend will see more travelers in their cars than last year.

Based on responses gleaned from a member survey, AAA estimates that 34.8 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more this Memorial Day weekend, an increase of 500,000 travelers over 2011. The survey also predicts that 88 percent of this weekend's travelers will skip planes and trains in favor of cars. 53 percent of those surveyed say that elevated fuel prices won't affect their travel plans.

While the number of travelers will likely go up this weekend, the AAA survey finds that distances traveled should decrease significantly. Respondents say they will travel an average of 642 miles over the holiday weekend, or 150 fewer miles than last year. This is where fuel prices manifest themselves; while high gas prices may not keep people from driving this weekend, they will keep them from driving as far as they might have if costs were lower.

2013 Audi S3 Spy Photos

2013 Audi S3 Spy Photos - Future Cars

2013 Audi S3 Spy Photos

2013 Audi S3 Spy Photos

Audi's 300-hp hot hatch will come to the U.S.—but maybe not as a hatch.

What It Is: An aggressive body kit, 18-inch wheels, and quad tailpipes caught our attention when photos of a track-testing Audi A3 came through from our spy photographer. This is almost definitely the upcoming hot Audi S3 model.
Why It Matters: On our shores, the S3 would be the flagship for Audi’s biggest push yet into premium compact cars. Being the first A3 variant to wear the “S” badging in the U.S., this new-gen car also will placate Euro enthusiasts who don’t have S4 money to spend.
Platform: The S3, like the A3 on which it’s based, will ride on an all-new platform. Audi and VW call the architecture MQB, an acronym for German words with several thousand letters apiece. It’s super flexible, and will underpin everything from the next VW Golf to a big three-row VW SUV. (We’ve got a detailed description of MQB and how it works here.) Underpinning the S3, the MQB platform will be in one of its lighter, smaller guises. The car in these spy shots is a three-door hatch, but it’s the least likely of the three global A3 body styles to come to the U.S. An S3 sedan is a near lock, and a five-door S3 hatch is at least on the table.
Powertrain: A turbocharged 2.0-liter four should give the S3 about 300 hp. The engine is most likely an evolution of the 2.0-liter four powering at least a dozen other Volkswagen and Audi products. Some current versions of this engine make just 200 hp, but the motor is good for 265 in the Audi TTS. The EA888 engine will mount transversely in the S3’s architecture, and an all-wheel-drive system will distribute power to all wheels.
What transmission Audi will offer in the S3 is a question we’re sore to even have to ask. A dual-clutch automatic is almost guaranteed, but the availability of a genuine stick is unclear as of now. Enthusiasts at the Church of Manual Transmissions chant the hymnal “No Stick, No Buy,” but we’re not always enough to persuade the product planners. We won on the Golf R, which comes only with a stick in the U.S., and control-freak American investment bankers are the sole reason BMW is offering a manual for the new M5. But the Audi TTS only has a DSG transmission, as do many of Volkswagen and Audi’s hotter offerings over in Europe.
Competition: BMW 135is, Ford Focus ST, Mini John Cooper Works, Subaru WRX STI, Volkswagen Golf R.
What Might Go Wrong: Prohibitive pricing could curb enthusiasm for a hot Audi hatch. So long as it starts at less than the 135i’s $40k-plus sticker, though, Audi should find takers. Potentially a bigger problem: Audi could well decide bringing the S3 to the U.S. isn’t worth the effort after all. Potentially tiny—in relative terms—sales numbers and a fluctuating euro could make the prospect of selling a small, premium performance car a daunting task.
Estimated Arrival and Price: We expect the S3 to make its debut at the Paris auto show this fall before hitting showrooms a year from now. The S3 likely will reside on the higher end of its non-BMW competition’s pricing scale, with a sticker in the $37,000 range. View Photo Gallery

Volkswagen to launch new Beetle convertible with three decade editions

Volkswagen E-Bugster concept

Posted May 24th 2012 6:32PM

Say what you will about the whole retro design trend that gave us such vehicles as the Mini, the Chrysler PT Cruiser, the Ford GT and the Fiat 500, but it has been (neo Thunderbird notwithstanding) a rather successful formula for several automakers, Volkswagen chief among them. The German automaker is now on its third generation of Beetle, and is preparing to launch the new convertible version at the Los Angeles Auto Show in the fall (previewed by the E-Bugster concept pictured above). And when it does, it is slated to go even more retro.

That much, according to Car and Driver, will come in three special launch editions. Each one will be dedicated to a specific decade from the original Beetle's long history – tipped to center around the 1950s, 60s and 70s. Special touches will be period-specific, including unique colors, seat upholstery and even white-wall tires. We'll have to wait a few months to see how many of these particular details pan out, but recent history has been replete with launch editions from Volkswagen.
